When I was teaching, this shaving cream marbling technique was one of my students favorite art activities. It is super versatile and can be done for all sorts of holidays and art projects. Since St. Patricks day is right around the corner I thought it would be fun to put a St. Patty’s spin on it 🙂
MATERIALS:
- Paint (I used acrylic this time but I have used washable paint and it works too)
- A tray or cookie sheet to hold shaving cream
- Shaving cream (the dollar store stuff works great)
- Cardstock
- Skewer or toothpick
- Ruler or credit card
First, squirt a good amount of shaving cream into your tray. Enough to make an even layer the size of your paper.
Spread the shaving cream out evenly. I used a ruler to spread and “flatten” the shaving cream.
Take your paint and make drips and drops all over your shaving cream. I think this was Hayes’ favorite part.
Next, drag the skewer (or toothpick) through the shaving cram and paint create your swirly, marbled design.
Lay your piece of card stock flat on the shaving cream. Lightly rub your hand over the card stock to make sure the whole piece is making contact with the paint and shaving cream.
When you lift off the card stock you should have a goopy, shaving cream and paint mess, but just wait!
Using the ruler or credit card press down firmly on the card stock and “scrape” off the shaving cream. I like using a ruler because you can cover the whole paper and remove everything in one swipe. Try to do this in one movement. The more you stop and start the more lines you will create in your marbled paper.
And TA-DA!!!! You have a beautiful marbled piece of paper ready to be cut into a shamrock. See the horizontal lines: That’s from us stopping mid drag to take a picture 🙂
