Recently I made this felt “board” for H. It is a fun spring themed way to practice buttoning and fine motor skills and it’s actually not very hard to make.
Here’s what you need:
- 2 felt sheets to be the background and back of your felt “board”
- green felt
- variety of felt colors for flowers
- buttons
- optional: ladybug buttons 🙂
- Fabric glue
First things first, cut out some grass to go along the bottom of your background felt.
Next I ran a line of fabric glue along the bottom of the grass to secure it to the background piece. I didn’t glue the tops down just yet because I wanted to be able to slip the stems behind the grass.
Then, I cut a few stems and leaves, arranged them on the felt and glued them down. I also glued down the tops of the grass. Now you could just leave the stems and leaves glued down and move on to the next step but I LOVE the way embroidery thread looks on felt so I added a few stitches along the stems and leaves 🙂
I sketched out some flower shapes on paper and cut them out and used those as my templates to cut my felt flowers. TIP: if you use tape to tape your paper template to the felt and then cut it makes it zoo ouch easier!
I assembled my flowers the way I wanted and glued them together. You could leave them unglued and let your kiddos build them how they want.
Time to sew on the buttons. I put buttons where I wanted flowers to go and added the ladybugs, because, well they are just cute 🙂
Using an Exacto knife I cute slits in the flowers so they could be slipped onto the buttons.
To make the felt a little more substantial and to hide all the knots and sticking on the back I glued another piece of felt to the back of my background piece.
That’s it!
