One of my all time favorite kid created projects are these embroidered handkerchiefs that the lower elementary (1-4th graders) students would create for Mother’s Day gifts at my old Montessori school in College Station. So I had my amazing friend, and the director of Traditions Montessori School, Diana, send me a few photos of the handkerchiefs from this year so I could share this sweet project with you. 🙂 I mean what mom wouldn’t swoon over this kid created treasure!!!?
Materials:
- Handkerchiefs or other fabric to embroider
- Washable markers (Tip from Diana: They need to be WASHABLE and needs to be markers, pencil does not work)
- embroidery thread
- embroidery hoop
- needle
- laundry bag
Process:
Have your kiddos draw whatever picture they would like and then embroider directly on top of the lines they draw. For older children they can do the sewing themselves and for younger guys you could do assist in the sewing or do the sewing for them. You may need to assist with knot tying either way 🙂
Once all of the sewing is done, place the handkerchief into a laundry bag and wash in the washing machine on normal cycle, cold with regular detergent to wash away all the marker. Keeping the handkerchief in the laundry bag run it through the dryer. Once it is dry lay it flat and iron to get out any remaining wrinkles. Fold, tie with a ribbon and give the best gift ever!!!

Hayes and I made our own version of this as a gift for my mom from H. So stay tuned for an update on how that turned out 🙂
