I’ve had felt on the brain lately! I really like making kid activities from felt because the look super cute, it’s easy to work with and they last.
So today I made a land, air, water felt mat to use for a sorting activity.
Materials:
- Felt sheets (2 light blue, 1 dark blue, 1 green, 1 grey) You can find these at almost any craft store and they are around 25-33 cents a piece
- Fabric glue
- optional: puff fabric paint
Glue the two light blue sheets together to make one long sheet of felt. This will create a backing for your whole landscape and also the sky.
Glue the green piece of felt on top of your blue background. This will become your land area.
I cut a wavy water edge in the blue felt and then glued that down overlapping the green.
And finally I cut some mountains out of the great felt to separate the land and sky and glued those at the top of the green felt.
I took some fabric paint and made a little tree, some ripple lines in the water and little snow caps on the mountains. I also made labels that said land, air and water and laminated those.
Last I just gathered some toy animals from our collection so they could be sorted and laid out on the mat. You could also find modes of transportation to be sorted (planes, cars, different types of boats, etc)
To store: I placed a small container with the animals and labels into a larger basket, along with the rolled felt mat.
Hayes has loved doing this activity.
